As a lifelong Clevelander I've seen it all, the shot, the drive, the fumble, the Mesa, the elbow, and the decison, yet I keep coming back for more. I love Cleveland, I love our sports teams, and if you feel the same way I know I can call you a friend, we may not always agree, hell we may never agree, but that one key thing in common will always keep us close. This is my blog where I write what I see, what I think, what I am hearing, and what just happened regardless of my love, my affiliation, or my audience, I tell it how I see it. I hope you read this and I entertain you or inform you, make you laugh or make you think, but most of all I hope you take part in the never ending discussion that is our love of our teams, leave comments, send me an email and I will get back to you. Thank you for taking time out of your day to be a part of mine.

Browns, Britt Agree to Deal

According to various reports the Cleveland Browns and former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Kenny Britt have agreed to terms on a free agent contract.

The deal is said to be a four-year pact worth $32.5 million.

The six-foot-three Britt is coming off a season where he caught 68 balls for 1002 yards and five scores.

At 28 years-old, Britt has been in the NFL for eight seasons, five with the Titans and three with the Rams.

The addition of Britt could be the end of Terelle Pryor’s time in Cleveland, as the deal Britt agreed to is similar to the one the team was offering Pryor, as I reported Tuesday.

Browns Will Allow Market to Set Price for Pryor

With NFL free agency set to begin on Thursday at 4 p.m. the Cleveland Browns still have one of their best offensive weapons about to set the market in wide receiver Terrelle Pryor.

According to someone with knowledge of the negotiations between Pryor and the team, the Browns have offered Pryor no more than $8 million per season on any offer, while Pryor and his representatives are seeking more than $10 million per season.

The Browns, rather than bid against themselves, are looking to allow the market to set Pryor’s value. It’s a dangerous move for a 1-15 football team who has struggled to keep talent in the past, but it also is something many teams such as the Patriots tend to do. While it works out for the best in New England, if Pryor walks it could be another black eye for the fledgling orange and Brown and another kick in the teeth to the teams overly loyal fan base.

There are at least five teams very interested in Pryor, led by the Philadelphia Eagles, who would welcome the 6’4″ former quarterback with welcome arms.

Will it work out for Cleveland? Only time will tell.

Browns Playing with Fire as Pryor Heads Towards Open Market

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday, Cleveland Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said that the teams plans regarding wide receiver Terrelle Pryor have not changed.

The teams still wants him back.

Then, during the same press conference, Brown said that the team “won’t panic” if their leading receiver in 2016 is not on the roster in 2017.

Hmmm…you’re kind of sending mixed signals there Sashi.

Wednesday was also the deadline for teams to tag players with the franchise or transition tags. The Browns chose to do neither with Pryor and with no deal reached, the 6’4″ wide out is now seemingly headed towards the open free agent market if they cannot reach a deal by March 7 at 4 p.m. when teams can begin contacting unrestricted free agents.

Had the Browns chosen to place the franchise tag on Pryor, he would’ve received a one-year deal worth $15.7 million. Pryor and the Browns would have until July 15 to reach a long-term deal or allow him to play out the one-year deal. If another team signed Pryor the Browns would also have the opportunity to match or receive a first round draft pick.

Had they chosen to use the transition tag on Pryor, the one-year deal would be for $13.3 million. The team would still have an opportunity to match any deal Pryor received but would get no compensation if they let him go. The deadline for a long-term deal would also be extended an extra week to July 22.

By choosing to use neither tag, the Browns are playing with fire. Pryor has zero reason to agree to a contract by March 7 after the team failed to complete a deal while they had basically exclusive rights on the emerging playmaker. On top of that, the comments made on Wednesday by Brown, who in most cases I have given the benefit of the doubt, makes it sound like the Cleveland Browns are once again the smartest team in the room.

Pryor is not an elite number one receiver at this point in his career and one of the tags would have been likely overpaying a guy with only one season of production, but they would have allowed the team to maintain nearly exclusive rights on one of their best players and given the team a chance to continue to change the way other teams look at the fledgling franchise.

Once his time comes on the open market, what will keep Pryor true to Cleveland? Yes, he has stated his love for the team, the city, and head coach Hue Jackson, but Pryor, more than anything, wants to win and get paid. If a team like the Philadelphia Eagles, who have their quarterback in place for the 2017 and look to be on the rise offers Pryor a deal for anything near what the Browns offer, why wouldn’t he be intrigued?

The Browns are still years away from contending. They have no answer to the never-ending quarterback question. They are still looked as a joke of a franchise who has let talent walk away year after year. After reaching a deal with LB Jamie Collins, they had a chance to remove that stigma briefly if they could also bring back their number one offensive free agent as well. Now, it is anybody’s guess where this ends up going, but the ball is no longer in the hands of the Browns. It is going to be passed around like one of the franchises failed draft picks.

Pryor may be back. He may not. Either way, the fire department should be on speed dial in Berea.

Browns, Pryor at Stalemate as Deadline Passes

The deadline to place franchise or transition tags for free agents came and went at 4 p.m. on Wednesday with no deal in place for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor, who led the team with 77 catches for 1007 yards, is seen as a priority for the team this offseason. However, Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that the team “won’t panic if he’s not on our roster” entering 2017.

With no deal and the deadline passing, Pryor is now headed towards free agency where an extremely rich market will await him. The team does have until March 7 to reach a deal before other teams can legally begin talking with Pryor.

Gordon to Apply for Reinstatement…Again

Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon plans to apply for reinstatement to the NFL once again.

Gordon was conditionally reinstated prior to last season and was eligible to participate in training camp and preseason games but faced a four-game suspension to begin the regular season. However, before he was activated he went into rehab and remained suspended indefinitely.

The former second-round pick in the 2012 Supplemental Draft was a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2013 when he led the league in receiving yards with 1646 yards despite missing two games due to suspension. Over the past three seasons he has missed 43 of 48 possible games.

Gordon has been posting various videos and pictures on social media and according to his business manager Michael Johnson, Gordon is “in the best shape of his life.”

If reinstated, Gordon is still property of the Browns. However, it would be shocking if he remains with the franchise entering he 2017 season.

Browns Agree to Deal with Colquitt

The Cleveland Browns and punter Britton Colquitt have agreed to terms on a four-year deal.

Colquitt, an undrafted free agent from Tennessee in 2009, averaged 45.3 yards per punt for the Browns after being cut by the Denver Broncos.
With Colquitt now in the fold and Isaiah Crowell tendered earlier on Tuesday, only Austin Pasztor and Terrelle Pryor remain unsigned.

Browns Give 2nd Round Tender to Crowell

The Cleveland Browns have offered running back Isaiah Crowell a second-round tender worth $2.81 million according to multiple sources.

Crowell, who was undrafted, is a restricted free agent. By receiving a second-round tender the Browns can now match any offer he receives or get a second round draft pick from that team if they choose not to match the offer.

Crowell had his best season in 2016 despite not getting more than 10 carries in six games. He finished with 952 yards while carrying the bulk of the load for the 1-15 Browns.

QB Search 2017: Player Profile Deshaun Watson

*This is part six of a 10 part series where we will take a look at the Cleveland Browns options for the elusive quarterback of the future.

Name: Deshaun Watson

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 210 pounds

Throws: Right

School: Clemson

NFL Team: N/A

Draft Spot or Projection: Mid Round 1-Late Round 2

Strengths: Throws a catchable ball…can make all the necessary throws…has enough arm strength but won’t wow anyone…accuracy is solid…EXCELLENT character…great teammate…TRUE leader…average pocket presence…mobile….can be dual threat, but more of a pocket guy…confident in his abilities…hard worker…winner…comes into the draft with a lot of upside…plays it cool in the biggest moments…has incredible and unteachable intangibles…

Weaknesses: Needs to get bigger but think he has frame to add 20 pounds…ball placement is a big problem and led to many ball security (interceptions) issues even when his man won the one on one matchup…inaccurate at times…footwork needs to improve, throws high a lot…needs to work through his progressions better…stares down primary option…like many college kids has little experience under center…

Summary: Watson’s intangibles are off of the charts. He is a true leader who commands his huddle and can will his team to victory. Love his upside but there are many things he needs to work on. If he can improve his footwork and adjust to an NFL offense and being under center, he can continue winning at the next level. He will also need to add some weight. Overall, he is a coaches dream, as long as that coach wants to teach him and work with him a lot before sending him onto the field.

Browns Release Hawkins

The Cleveland Browns released wide receiver and fan favorite Andrew Hawkins on Monday. The move comes after the veteran reciever asked the team for his release so that he could move on and possibly get a championship before his career ends.

At 30-years-old, Hawkins served as a mentor for the young players on the Browns roster and was an all around great guy on and off of the field. Over three seasons Hawkins started 28 games and brought in 123 catches for 1424 yards and five touchdowns.

In typical Hawkins fashion, he left an extremely classy message to the fans and the organization on UNINTERRUPTED‘s twitter feed, “As of today, I am officially a former Cleveland Brown. Flew to Cleveland last week, met with the team. It was a tough call, but at the end of the day, just felt it was in the best interest of all that we move on.”

Browns head coach Hue Jackson also weighed in on the termination of Hawkins’ contract in a statement released by the team;

It’s tough to say goodbye to men like Hawk, that have done everything you’ve asked of them and gone above and beyond when it comes to leadership. Hawk was a rock for us last season. He kept our locker room together and led by example as he gave everything he had on the field. Our young players are going to be better players and better people because of the time they spent with Andrew Hawkins.

The loss of Hawkins leaves the Browns extremely young at the wide receiver position with second-year guys Corey Coleman, Rashard Higgins, Jordan Payton, and Ricardo Louis as the only pass catchers currently signed to the roster as the team attempts to bring back Terrelle Pryor this offseason.

Top Five Best QB’s For the Browns Since 1999: Number Five Josh McCown

Over the next few weeks here at OrangeandBrown365.com, I will be ranking the Browns best players in a few different groups. The best place to start of course is at the most talked about position, quarterback.

Since 1999, 26 different guys have started a game under center for the orange and brown. Many of them were terrible, some were decent, some were serviceable, but none were great. That is why this list was so hard to come up with and also why there have been 26 different names to choose from.

Without further delay, the number five quarterback for the Cleveland Browns is….

Josh McCown

mccown

McCown came to the Browns in February of 2015 after signing a three-year deal with then general manager Ray Farmer.

It was believed by many that McCown would come in and start and allow the Browns to slowly bring along 2014 first round pick Johnny Manziel. McCown was also the perfect guy to mentor the former Heisman Trophy winner. By May of 2015, McCown was named the starter.

In his first game as starter, the gritty and gutsy McCown was knocked out of the game when he dove head first into the endzone and was sent into a helicopter spin by then Jets, and now Browns, linebacker Demario Davis. He missed the next week with a concussion before returning to the lineup in week three when he threw for over 340 yards in a 27-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders. In all, McCown started eight games for the Browns in 2015. He started three more in 2016. His record in those eleven games was 1-10.

In 13 total games in the orange helmet, McCown threw for 3209 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Over two drama filled seasons with the Browns, McCown was a consummate professional. He was a stand up guy on and off of the field and had some of the highest yardage games of any quarterback the team has had since 1999. Though his record with the team will show just one win, he comes in at number five on this list for the way he played on the field and the way he handled all of the drama around the franchise. McCown is the blue-collar type of player that fans in Cleveland can relate to and love to watch play.

The Browns released him on February 7, 2017. Before doing so, head coach Hue Jackson did extend an invite to McCown to become part of the coaching staff. The 37-year-old journeyman declined and is now a free agent.

Up Next: Number 4 Kelly Holcomb

Browns Re-Sign Hughlett

After years of letting talent get away, the Cleveland Browns most recent front office said that they would make sure they would not let that trend continue. So far this offseason, they’ve kept their word.

After re-signing linebacker Jamie Collins, the Browns have agreed to a six-year deal with longsnapper Charlie Hughlett, that according to his agent makes him the highest paid long snapper in the NFL:

hughlett

The 6’4″, 248 pound, Hughlett is in second season with the Browns after being undrafted out of Central Florida.

If there is any indication of how good Hughlett has been as a long snapper, just ask Browns fans who he is. The fact that seven out of nine people I spoke with tonight were clueless as to who he was means he has done a very good job.
